Relocating to Houston as a Medical Family – Ep 35

Episode Summary

Houston Realtor and physician spouse Whitney Conkling shares what medical families should consider when relocating—from call schedules and hospital commutes to schools, neighborhoods, resale value, and finding community.

Episode Notes

Relocating for medicine is rarely just a move. It can mean rebuilding a career, finding a community, managing a demanding medical schedule, and making major housing decisions with very little time. In this episode, Zoe Taylor talks with Houston Realtor and physician spouse Whitney Conkling about moving from New York City to Houston with a six-week-old during the summer of 2020 so her husband could begin a cardiovascular anesthesiology fellowship.

Whitney shares how the logistics of the relocation largely fell on her shoulders, how she rebuilt her own career in a city she had left 15 years earlier, and why a physician family's medical specialty and call schedule should influence where they live. She also explains why Houston buyers need to look beyond the house itself and consider commute patterns, schools, flood history, construction quality, future resale, and the kind of community they want to build.
